Psychology & Social Work

Understand human behaviour and create meaningful change in individuals and communities.

Psychology and social work are two closely related fields focused on understanding and improving human wellbeing. While psychology explores how the mind works — from cognition and emotion to development and mental health — social work applies that understanding to support vulnerable people through practical intervention and advocacy. Both offer deeply rewarding careers that change lives.

What You'll Study

Psychology degrees cover cognitive, developmental, social, and biological psychology, as well as research methods and statistics. A BPS-accredited degree (accredited by the British Psychological Society) is the first step towards becoming a chartered psychologist.

Social work degrees, approved by Social Work England, combine theory with substantial practice placements. You'll study law, ethics, safeguarding, human development, and intervention methods, while gaining real-world experience in local authorities, charities, or the NHS.

Career Opportunities

Psychology graduates work in roles such as assistant psychologist, mental health support worker, human resources, and market research — with further study leading to chartered psychologist, clinical psychologist, or counsellor positions. Social work graduates become registered social workers in children's or adult services. Starting salaries are £24,000–£32,000, with experienced practitioners and chartered psychologists earning £40,000–£60,000+.

Who Is This For?

These fields attract empathetic, resilient people who want to understand and help others. Social work in particular values life experience, making it a popular choice for mature students and career changers. Access to HE Diplomas and foundation years are widely accepted as entry routes for both psychology and social work degrees.
